Carers Experience of Discharge From Hospital

Working with NHS England and Improvement on their Commitment to Carers Programme we have interviewed 12 local carers about their experience of discharge from hospital when the person they care for has been admitted to hospital for elective surgery or via emergency admission.

The Interviews

We carried out one to one interviews with 12 local carers to gain an insight into their experience of the discharge from hospital process.

We spoke to a range of carers including young carers and parent carers, the needs of the cared for person was also very different and we covered carers of people with dementia, carers of people with mental health problems and carers of people with substance misuse issues.

All the experience were very different with some positive and some negative, all the stories were gathered together and presented to local Service Providers and Commissioners.

Focus Group with Service Providers and Commissioners

We held a focus group to talk about the main findings from our interviews and had some group discussions on the way forward. Our report has been shared with NHS England and Improvement and the findings will be published in a national report later this year.

Next Steps

We are working with Barnsley Council, Barnsley Hospital, Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group and Barnsley Carers service to look at the recommendations from the report and make changes to services.

We are working with the Carers Strategy Group to make sure that the findings are reflected in the work they are doing
